I graduated from Curtin University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science Occupational Therapy degree. It was never planned, but after starting at Royal Perth Hospital in the specialty area of hand and upper limb rehabilitation, I continued to work in Hand Units and specialise in hand therapy for the next 20 years.
After training in Perth teaching hospitals, I was fortunate to travel and work in England for several years including NHS teaching hospitals St Thomas’ Hospital, Kings College and University College Hospital. On return to the WA sunshine, I spent the next decade as Senior OT at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Hand and Upper Limb Clinic.
I have loved the clinical complexity and variety of conditions treated in Tertiary Hospitals, managing acute trauma, emergency and elective surgery as well as chronic and degenerative conditions, with constant learning within a multidisciplinary team environment. I am a passionate teacher, mentoring students and hand therapists and developed a special interest in research, in particular conservative management of finger fractures. My research on conservative fracture management has been published in peer-reviewed journals and I have been an invited speaker at both national and international Hand Therapy and Hand Surgeon conferences.
Life goals of returning to the south coast and country living has meant a change from working in big teams in Tertiary Hospitals to setting up my own clinic in Albany, providing a service to Great Southern locals helping people recover and getting back to life, whatever that may be.
So, if you are in the Great Southern and need therapy for your hand, wrist or elbow, or for further information, please feel free to call me at Hands-On!
Regards,
Brent
